Starfield Player Points Out Funny Mistake That Baseball Fans Can't Unsee (2024)

Highlights

  • Starfield's continuity error involving a baseball plaque from 1978 has sparked debate among players and fans alike.
  • The discrepancy lies in the Boston Red Sox not making the playoffs in the real-life version of 1978 despite the plaque claiming as such, raising questions about the game's accuracy.
  • While some attribute the error to an inside joke by the developers, others point out potential explanations for the inconsistency.

One Starfield player has discovered a possible continuity error hidden in a minute detail, and it's related to America's favorite past time — baseball. While Starfield takes place near the middle of the 24th century, it's still based on a divergent timeline of the actual Earth, and the continuity error happened all the way back in the 1970s.

Starfield takes place in a point on the timeline long after the destruction of Earth's magnetosphere, and it packs in a lot of backstory to explain what happened in the roughly 300 years between the game's real-world launch and the opening cinematic. While most of the 1,000 planets and moons in the game are sparsely inhabited at best, it also plays host to a number of larger settlements spread throughout the galaxy, such as Starfield's New Homestead settlement, which is funded largely by tourism of its gallery of old earth antiques.

One particular antique that players may find in multiple locations throughout the game is the Antique Earth Baseball, which sits mounted on a pedestal and is a high-price Starfield item for its weight. However, as Reddit user infuriatesloth has pointed out, zooming in on the pedestal's plaque reveals an error that only hardcore sports aficionados would catch. The plaque states that the baseball was used in Boston circa 1978 during the playoffs, but the Boston Red Sox didn't even qualify for the Major League Baseball playoffs that year.

Starfield's Antique Earth Baseball Could be a Continuity Error

Many fans have been quick to add the baseball's plaque to the list of other Starfield errors, but there are some other possible explanations for the inconsistency. The Red Sox have made the MLB playoffs in 25 of the team's 124 seasons to date. While the team had a playoff drought from 1976 to 1985, The Red Sox bookended that drought with appearances in the World Series, and while there would be at least a three-year gap from 1978, historians would be trying to trace the object's records back by more than three centuries. There's also nothing stating that the playoffs that are mentioned would have to be tied to the MLB, as they could be for a local league.

Of course, even if the date is an error, it could all be an inside joke by Bethesda. Another of the developer's RPGs, Fallout 4, takes place in and around Boston, and its Diamond City was built around Fenway Park, the Red Sox's historic home. That game also hosts a sports historian, Moe Cronin, who tells the history of baseball and gets all the facts wrong, like believing that the bat was used to mercilessly beat down defenders while a player was running the bases.
