THE PLAIN DEALER THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 1995 7-D HORSE RACING TRIPLE CROWN COUNTDOWN THISTLEDOWN YESTERDAY'S CHARTS Derby a race without a favorite Well, who is it? Name the favorite for this year's Kentucky Derby. The 121st Run for the Roses goes to the post two weeks from Saturday and last weekend's results both on the racetrack and on X-ray film all but assures that the Churchill Downs starting gate will hold 20 starters, the maximum allowed by Derby rules, none an overwhelming choice. First, longshot Wild Syn stole Saturday's Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland by crawling the first half mile in 49 seconds. Soon afterward, at Aqueduct, Talkin Man beat what may be the softest Wood Memorial field in the race's 71-year history. He was the Wood's only graded stakes winner.

On Sunday morning came the announcement that Larry the Legend was lost to the Kentucky Derby. Owner-trainer Craig Lewis reported his courageous colt had chipped his left front knee in winning the April 8 Santa Anita Derby and, following surgery on Tuesday, will be lost to racing until fall. "We're disappointed to miss the Kentucky Derby, but we're appreciative we have such a nice colt and we look forward to his return with great anticipation," Lewis said. So, with Larry the Legend on the shelf, Florida Derby winner and Blue Grass favorite Thunder Gulch a bad fourth to Wild Syn, and last year's ju- AT THE WIRE, AT THE GATE Date Race April 15 $500,000 April 15 $500,000 April 15 $200.000 April 22 $500,000 April 23 $150,000 venile champion Timber Country winless in '95, who will be the post time favorite in Louisville? "I'm very skeptical about being the Kentucky Derby favorite," said Roger Attfield, the trainer of Talkin Man. "But he looks very strong.

I'm sure it is going to be a tremendous race and maybe the filly will be in there." Talkin Man, a Canadian-bred, won the Wood by lengths. In his previous start, Aqueduct's March 25 Gotham, he also romped, by seven lengths. Still, the colt who finished 10th, beaten 16 lengths in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, hasn't convinced everybody that he's the prince of the Derby crop. "Talkin Man was awfully impressive, but they tend to look that way when running against average said Mark Hennig, who saddled Wood also-ran Key Guy. Serena's Song is a D.

Wayne Lukas-trainee who beat the boys in the April 1 Jim Beam at Turfway Park. Lukas has yet to decide if he'll add the frontrunning daughter of Rahy to his Derby lineup that includes Timber Country and Thunder Gulch. Serena's Song and Thunder Gulch worked at Churchill Downs on Monday morning, both timed five furlongs in 1:00 "I have three dead-fit horses to run in the Derby," said Lukas. "They all have credentials, so I don't have to agonize now." However, Lukas remains undecided about Serena's Song. He can try the boys in the Derby or run her the day before in the Kentucky Oaks, a race she'd be heavily favored to win.
