These clean eating bread crumbs are easy to make and can be used in any recipe that calls for bread crumbs!

I love bread crumbs.

They are such versatile little crumbles. You can make breaded baked chicken with them, add them to meat loaf or to meat balls!

The problem with the bread crumbs you buy in the store is they always have something in them that doesn’t qualify as clean. And since they are so simple to make, I haven’t purchased them at the store in years.

Toast your bread. Make sure it’s well toasted, even if you have to toast it twice. Then, let it sit out for a few minutes to cool completely. You want the bread to be dry, dry, dry.

  1. So easy, I love it! I was just at the store looking at a bag of whole wheat bread crumbs, and the list of ingredients was ridiculously long (and I had no idea what some of the things were!)… so I put the bag back and vowed to make my own. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

    1. Cailin – You’re welcome! I think you’ll find that these taste a lot better than the store bought stuff too!

  2. I always grind up leftover bread after toasting and store in the freezer, but have never thought to add seasonings to make it ready to go. Great idea!

    1. Alisa – I like adding seasoning because it gives a lot more flavor to whatever I’m adding the bread crumbs to. Great idea to grind and freeze though! Good way to always have some on hand. Thanks!

  3. Thanks so much for posting this! I just posted a clean eating fail – I tried to make fish and chips – didn’t work out so well but I’ll try these tips for my next batch of bread crumbs!

    1. Megpies – For fish and chips, I’d bake them about 1/4 the time and then add them to the fish. Otherwise, they’ll burn if you add the baking time for the fish. Enjoy!

  4. Have you tried adding ground flaxseed to them? I am going to try it with our fish tonight (lightly pan fried).

    1. Mia – I’m sure that would be very good! Enjoy!

  6. Do you have any brands for clean bread?

    Reply

    1. Tara – Ezekiel bread is clean. And if you have a trader joe’s, they have a clean bread as well.

  7. Yes. In the freezer is best.

  8. Will sprouted grain bread work?

    Reply

    1. Jessica F – Any bread will work so long as it’s toasted.

  9. Hi! I am just beginning my knowledge of clean eating due to a dear friends cancer diagnosis.
I’m assuming that all the ingredients in the breadcrumbs, including spices, need to be organic. But, any specifics for the Parmesan cheese? I just assumed that all cheese is unclean.

Thank you SO MUCH for this website! It’s making my journey so much less overwhelming!

    1. Amanda – Real cheese is just fine unless you are sensitive to dairy. But that has nothing to do with clean eating. Just enjoy it in moderation. And while organic is always the better choice, you don’t have to eat organic to eat clean. Seems odd, I know. But if you can buy all organic, I highly encourage it.
