Biden Issues Order That Would Shut Down Asylum Requests At The US-Mexico Border

The White House is telling lawmakers that President Joe Biden is preparing to sign off on an executive order that would shut down asylum requests to the U.S.-Mexico border once the number of daily encounters hits 2,500 between ports of entry, with the border reopening once that number declines to 1,500, according to several people familiar with the discussions. The impact of the 2,500 figure means that the border could be closed to migrants seeking asylum effectively immediately, because daily figures are higher than that now. Joining us today on AirTalk is Nick Miroff, reporter covering the Department of Homeland Security for the Washington Post and Jean Reisz, clinical associate professor of Law and co-director of USC Immigration Clinic.

The Latest On Real IDs: When Is The Deadline And How Do You Get Them?

The new deadline to get a Real ID is May 7th, 2025. California Real IDs will be marked with a golden bear and a star. Approved by congress in 2005, the goal of the Real IDs is to improve security and minimize the potential for fraud. To obtain a California Real ID, residents must visit a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office in person and present documents that prove their identity, Social Security number, and California residency. These documents typically include a valid passport or birth certificate, a Social Security card or W-2 form, and two proofs of address such as utility bills or rental agreements. Joining us on AirTalk this morning to discuss the latest information with Real IDs Steve Gordon, director of the California Department for Motor Vehicles.

The Unique Challenges Facing Big Sur’s Highway 1

The scenic stretch of Highway 1 running along the Big Sur coast has become one of the state’s most prized features — but it’s been dealing with landslides since it opened almost 90 years ago. Its most recent collapse came in late March, after heavy rains caused part of the southbound lane near Rocky Creek Bridge to break off into the Pacific Ocean. At the time, CalTrans was still repairing damage from three other slides.

The road has since reopened to the public, using an alternating single lane — but thanks to climate change and the cliff’s unique makeup of rocks, experts say that it’s only a matter of time before another landslide damages a new portion of the highway. Gary Griggs, distinguished professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz, joins us to talk about why Big Sur’s Highway 1 is so vulnerable and the options we have to try to protect it.

From Planning To Grading: How Have Schools Been Utilizing AI This School Year?

At the beginning of artificial intelligence’s introduction to the public consciousness, a lot was made about how students could use technology to write essays or summarize books they should be reading, ultimately not doing their assigned work. Although some of these issues have become identifiable for schools, teachers have also tried to find ways to use AI as a tool to schedule lesson plans and help better organize their calendars, some even using it as a way to help them grade. This all comes at a time when the state has offered recommendations for how to utilize AI in classrooms but has done very little to audit how it's being used. So what specific ways are teachers using the tool to help them maximize their workflow and limit the impacts of burnout?

Today on AirTalk, we discuss the methods in which AI is being used with Khari Johnson, tech reporter for CalMatters who’s been following this, and Stephen Aguilar, associate professor of education at USC’s Rossier School of Education.
