Ultimate. Comfort. Food. Seriously. This Wonton Noodle Soup will keep you warm and satisfied all winter long without having to take a trip to the Chinese restaurant.

A light chicken based broth flavored with fresh ginger, shiitake mushrooms, dried shrimp, green onions and a touch of soy sauce, it's the type of broth that feels like it could heal all ailments.

Juicy wontons, tender noodles, barbecued pork (optional)...these are the thing that make life worth living.

When it's cold outside, or you're feeling under the weather, this is the soup you want (or you might want this hearty chicken feet soup that I LOVE). Light and fresh without lacking any flavor, this soup is ready in just a few minutes making it perfect for any time of the year. We're also pretty big fans of this Bak Kut Teh any time of the year.

Ingredients

Typically, wontons are made with ground pork, shrimp, green onions, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil. I use a variety of different frozen wontons; they should be quite easy to find in the freezer section of the Asian grocery store or even your local store.

While I use frozen wontons in this recipe for simplicity, I do recommend making your own at least once - the difference is incredible! Check out this tutorial from Just One Cookbook on How to Wrap Wontons.

Use Homemade Chicken Bone Broth to get the most flavorful soup - I promise it makes a huge difference! Plus it's made in the Instant Pot, making it extra easy! You can also use this Crockpot Chicken broth for great results!

The Char Siu (or Chinese BBQ Pork) in this recipe is purely optional, but I love the extra flavor and oomph it adds to the soup. Learn how to make Char Siu.

The noodles used are wonton noodles, but any Asian style egg noodle can be substituted in a pinch. Buy wonton noodles.

Dried shrimp are used to make the broth. I have found it difficult to find dried shrimp in my local grocery store, so I buy dried shrimp online.

Other ingredients include shiitake mushrooms, green onions, soy sauce, and ginger. A full list is included in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Expert Tips

  1. Be sure to taste the broth before adding salt. Some store bought broths have a lot of salt, and homemade will typically have none. Salt to your taste preference.
  2. For a clearer soup, strain the broth through cheesecloth to remove any particles.
  3. To make it a full meal you can add pieces of chicken, turkey, pork, tofu, shrimp, etc.
  4. Serve it with a spicy chili oil like this Homemade Chili Oil from Woks of Life - this stuff is sooooo good!!
